    Quick answer: Big Apple Moving offers a military discount to active-duty service members, veterans, and their spouses and children, on production of a valid military ID. Moves are billed hourly from $150 with no minimum number of hours, and the discount comes off that rate. We are a commercial mover you hire directly — which is what you need if you are doing a personally procured move rather than one arranged by your installation.

    Big Apple Moving has been moving New Yorkers since 1979. A good share of that is service families — into Fort Hamilton, out to a new duty station, or out of uniform and staying in the city.

    This page covers who qualifies for the discount, which IDs we accept, and the part most moving-company pages leave out: which kind of military move actually lets you choose your own mover, and what paperwork you need from us if you want to be reimbursed for it.

    The Discount and the IDs We Accept

    Active duty

    Serving members of any branch. Bring your Common Access Card when you book.

    Retired and veterans

    A Retired Military ID Card, a Veteran ID Card, or the veteran designation printed on your state driver’s licence.

    Spouses

    The discount extends to spouses. Bring the serving or retired member’s ID at booking.

    Dependent children

    Dependent children of serving, retired and veteran personnel qualify on the same basis.

    Tell us when you request the quote rather than after the job — the discount is applied to your estimate, not refunded afterwards.

    Which kind of move is yours?

    Government-Arranged, or One You Arrange Yourself?

    There are two ways a military move happens, and only one of them lets you pick the mover.

    If your installation’s Personal Property Office arranges it, they assign the carrier. We are not a Department of Defense contracted carrier and we will not pretend otherwise — in that case your point of contact is the transportation office, not us.

    If you are doing a personally procured move — still widely called a DITY — you hire the mover yourself and the government reimburses you afterwards. That is where we come in. You get an itemised invoice, and certified weight tickets where the move is weighed, because those are what your claim depends on.

    It is worth confirming the current process with your transportation office. The Global Household Goods Contract was cancelled in June 2025 and moves returned to installation Personal Property Offices, with the new Personal Property Activity standing up in May 2026.

    Not after the move. The discount is built into the estimate, and an estimate issued without it is the one you will be invoiced against.

    2Show a valid ID at booking

    Any of the four listed above. We check it once and note it on the job.

    Speak to us rather than going through a third-party lead site, so the discount and the paperwork are set up together.

    4Ask about packing, storage and paperwork

    Tell us at the same time if you need packing, storage between duty stations, or documentation for a reimbursement claim.

    Included as standard

    Wrapping (blankets, tape, shrink). TV boxes & picture bins included. Loading and unloading. Basic disassembly and reassembly. Fuel and tolls included. Basic Insurance.

    No minimum number of hours

    From $150 an hour with the truck included. A short job is billed as a short job,.

    Licensed, insured, and checkable

    USDOT #382368. A certificate of insurance for your building at no charge, usually the same business day — most New York buildings will not let a mover past the lobby without one.

    Do you offer a military discount? +
    Yes. Big Apple Moving offers a military discount to active-duty service members, veterans, and their spouses and children, on production of a valid military ID. Tell us when you request the quote rather than after the job, and we will apply it to your estimate.

    No, and we will not claim otherwise. We are a commercial moving company you hire directly. If your installation’s Personal Property Office is arranging your move, they assign the carrier and your point of contact is the transportation office rather than us.
    Can you help with a personally procured move? +
    Yes — this is where we fit. On a personally procured move, still widely called a DITY, you choose and hire the mover yourself and the government reimburses you afterwards. We are exactly the kind of company you would hire for that, and we will give you the documentation your claim depends on.
    Will you provide the paperwork I need to get reimbursed? +
    Yes. You get an itemised invoice, and certified weight tickets where the move is weighed. Ask us for both at booking rather than afterwards, so the paperwork matches what your claim needs from the start.
    Does the discount apply to packing and storage as well as the move? +
    Ask when you request your quote and we will confirm what it covers for your particular booking. We would rather tell you plainly up front than have you discover a limit at invoice stage.
    Do you move to and from Fort Hamilton and West Point? +
    Yes. Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn is the city’s active installation and we move into and out of the boroughs around it regularly, along with West Point up the Hudson. Long-distance moves out of the region are handled by the same crews who load you here.
