What Do Hourly Movers Cost in NYC?
Two movers and a truck run $130 to $160 an hour in New York City. Four movers and a truck run $220 to $270. The rate covers the crew, the truck, the fuel and the equipment. It is not a per-person charge you add up yourself.

A bigger crew is usually cheaper, not more expensive. This is the part most people get backwards. Four movers at $240 an hour who finish in five hours costs $1,200. Two movers at $145 an hour on the same job take eleven or twelve hours and cost more, and you have lost the day. Ask for the estimated hours alongside the rate and compare the two totals, never the two rates.

What You Are Actually Paying For
Most disputes about an hourly move come from a misunderstanding about when the clock runs. Here is the honest version.
There Is a Three-Hour Minimum
Standard across New York City, ours included. A forty-minute job a few blocks away is still charged at three hours. It is why hourly is a poor fit for very small moves, and why we will tell you if that is what you have.
Travel Time Is Billed
The time to get the truck from our yard to you, and back at the end, is normally billed. Some companies hide this as a flat travel fee instead. Ask which you are being quoted, because one scales with distance and the other does not.
The Clock Starts on Arrival
Not when the crew leaves the yard, and not when the first box is lifted. It stops when the last item is placed and the paperwork is signed.
Wrapping and Disassembly Are On the Clock
They are not extra line items, but they are not free either. A bed frame that has to come apart and go back together is typically forty minutes across both ends.
Waiting Is Billed
If the elevator is not released, the keys have not arrived, or the building will not let the crew start, the clock runs. This is the most common source of unplanned hours in New York.
Rounding Is to the Quarter Hour
After the three-hour minimum, time is billed in fifteen-minute increments, not rounded up to the next full hour.
What Is Included in the Hourly Rate
Everything below is inside the hourly rate. If another company quotes you a lower rate, check which of these they bill separately.
The Truck, Fuel and Equipment
Dollies, straps, ramps and hand tools. You are not renting anything separately.
Blankets, Shrink Wrap and Tape
Furniture protection is part of the job. Sofas, mattresses, dressers and anything with a finish get wrapped before they move.
Floor and Doorway Protection
Runners on hardwood and carpet, padding on door jambs and banisters, at both ends.
Disassembly and Reassembly
Beds, tables, desks and shelving come apart at pickup and go back together at delivery. No separate handyman fee.
Licensed and Insured Crews
Registered with the New York State Department of Transportation for moves within the state and holding an active USDOT number for interstate work, with cargo and liability coverage on every job.
Certificate of Insurance
Issued free to your building management, naming the building as additional insured. Send us their requirements when you book.
How to Keep the Hours Down
On an hourly move, everything you do before the crew arrives comes straight off the bill. The five below are worth the most, and the first one is worth more than the other four combined.
A crew that arrives to half-packed cupboards can lose two or three hours before a single piece of furniture moves.
Small Jobs, Single Items and Two Movers With a Truck
The most common hourly booking we take is two movers and a truck for a few hours. It suits a studio or a small one-bedroom, a single large item, a few pieces between apartments, or a job that is too big for a car and too small for a full-day move.
Studios and Small One-Bedrooms
Within the city, typically three to five hours with two movers. The most common booking on this page.
A Single Large Item
A sofa, bed or wardrobe moving between two addresses, including up or down stairs. Too big for a car, too small for a full move.
Clearing a Storage Unit
Emptying a unit into an apartment, or the reverse. Usually straightforward and usually close to the minimum.
A Partial Move
You take the boxes yourself and book the crew for the furniture only. Common with a short move inside the same building.
Where it stops working: once the job needs more than about six hours with two people, a three or four-person crew almost always finishes sooner and costs less overall. We will say so when we quote rather than let you book the smaller crew and run long. And remember the three-hour minimum. If the job is genuinely under an hour, hourly is the wrong product and we will tell you.

Labor-Only Moving: You Supply the Truck, We Supply the Crew
Not every hourly job needs our truck. If you have already rented a van, booked a portable container, or only need things moved around inside one building, you can book the crew on its own and pay a lower hourly rate.

The same three-hour minimum applies. Travel time is still billed, because the crew still has to get to you.
What people use it for. Loading or unloading a rental truck you are driving yourself. Filling or emptying a portable storage container on the kerb. Clearing a storage unit into a van you already have. Moving furniture between floors or apartments inside the same building. Rearranging heavy furniture within a home, after a floor refinish or before a renovation.
What to know before you book it. You are responsible for the vehicle and for anything that happens to your belongings while they are in it, since it is not ours and it is not on our insurance. Our cargo coverage applies to items we transport in a Big Apple Moving truck. You also need to supply the moving blankets and straps if you want the load padded and secured inside your own vehicle, or ask us to bring them and we will quote the materials separately. And if the container or truck is not on site and accessible when the crew arrives, the clock still runs. Container delivery windows slip more often than people expect, so build slack into the booking.
When it is not the cheaper option. Once you factor in the rental, the fuel, the mileage and the deposit, a labor-only booking plus a rented van often lands close to a standard hourly move with our truck, and you are the one driving in New York traffic. Tell us both plans at the quote stage and we will tell you honestly which comes out lower for your job.
When Hourly Is the Wrong Choice
We quote both ways and we would rather put you on the right one. Hourly is not always it.
The common thread in every case below is uncertainty. On an hourly move that uncertainty sits with you, and in a New York building there is usually more of it than anyone expects.
Fourth-Floor Walk-Ups and Long Carries
Stairs are the biggest variable in New York and they are hard to estimate honestly. On an hourly move that risk sits with you. A flat fee moves it to us.
A Strict Elevator Window
If the window slips, the hourly clock keeps running. A fixed price does not move.
Long-Distance and Interstate
