Do Movers Take Furniture Apart and Put It Back Together?
Yes. It is a normal part of a move, not an add-on service, and any mover who tells you otherwise is quoting you a different job.

What Disassembly and Reassembly Actually Adds
The honest way to price this is in minutes, because that is how it is billed. These are both ends – apart at the old place, back together at the new one – with two movers.

The wardrobe is the one to plan for. Everything else on that list is minutes. A PAX-style wardrobe with doors and interior fittings can add two hours to a move on its own, and it is worth deciding in advance whether it is coming with you – flat-pack wardrobes are near the top of the list of things that cost more to move than to replace.

Assembly on Its Own, Without a Move
We do book assembly as a standalone job – a delivery that arrived flat-packed, a room being reorganised, a rental being furnished. It is a labour-only booking, billed hourly from $150 with no minimum number of hours.
Two movers, not one. A wardrobe carcass, a bunk bed or a wall unit is a two-person job whether or not two people turn up, and a crew that moves furniture for a living arrives with the dollies, the straps and the padding already on the van. Because there is no minimum number of hours, you can book a single item without paying for a block of time you do not use.
A Whole Room or a Whole Apartment
Three hours of two movers will get through a full bedroom set – bed, wardrobe, dresser, nightstands – in the time it takes one person to work through the wardrobe alone. The minimum stops being a minimum the moment there is more than one thing to build.
Anything Heavy or Awkward
A crew that moves furniture for a living has the dollies, the straps and the second pair of hands. Assembling a bunk bed or a wall unit is a two-person job whether or not you booked two people.
When It Needs Moving as Well as Building
Getting a delivery from the lobby to the fourth floor and then built is one booking with us and two with anyone else.
When It Has to Come Apart Again First
Reorganising rather than unboxing – a wall unit that has to be dismantled, moved across the apartment and rebuilt. That is our day job.
What We Take Apart, and What Stays Whole
Not everything should come apart. Some things travel better assembled, and a few things will not survive being taken apart twice.
Always Comes Apart
Bed frames, bunk beds, most wardrobes, dining tables with removable legs, desks, modular shelving, sectional sofas. These are designed to come apart and they travel far better in pieces.
Comes Apart if the Route Needs It
Wall units, large bookcases, oversized headboards. We measure the doorways, the turns and the lift before deciding. If it will make the turn assembled, it goes assembled.
Stays Whole
Solid wood furniture with glued joints, antiques, anything with a mechanism – recliners, sofa beds, adjustable bases. Taking these apart usually creates a problem rather than solving one.
Flat-Pack That Has Already Been Apart Once
Particleboard furniture does not enjoy a second disassembly. The cam locks and dowel holes loosen. We will still do it, but we will tell you first if we think a piece is unlikely to come back as solid as it went.
Anything Fixed to the Building

Empty It First, Please
Drawers and cabinets come out empty. A dresser full of clothes is heavier than it looks, the drawers slide on the stairs, and we cannot take the frame apart with the contents still in it.
IKEA, Wayfair and Everything Else Flat-Packed
Flat-pack is most of what we take apart, and it behaves differently from solid furniture.
For scale, the published DIY times: a simple bed frame runs about 90 minutes, a MALM-style four-drawer dresser 45 to 75 minutes, and a PAX-style wardrobe with doors and internal fittings anywhere from three to five hours. A full bedroom is a four to six hour afternoon.
Two movers who do this every day take roughly 40 minutes on a bed frame across both ends of a move. That gap is the whole argument.
What we ask of you: keep the instructions if you have them, and tell us at the quote stage if you own a PAX or a similar wardrobe system. It is the one item that changes a crew size.
What we will tell you honestly: a five-year-old flat-pack wardrobe that has already been moved once is often not worth moving again. The disassembly, the transport and the reassembly can cost more than the replacement, and it will be less sturdy afterwards. We would rather say that at the survey than on the day.
