Jamaica is the fastest-changing move market in Queens. The neighborhood plan approved in October 2025 rezoned roughly 230 blocks around Jamaica Center for close to 12,000 new homes, with towers up to 23 stories allowed on Jamaica Avenue — and the first station-area buildings are already leasing. Moving into one is freight-elevator, COI work; moving out of the surrounding houses of South Jamaica, Jamaica Hills or the Estates is classic full-house work. Big Apple Moving does both, hourly from $150/hr for two movers or on one binding figure, with the paperwork out the same business day.
A transit hub becomes a housing hub
Jamaica Station already moves more than 200,000 people on an average weekday across the LIRR, the E, J and Z, the AirTrain and 18 bus lines — the fourth-busiest commuter rail station in North America, now heading into a $50 million redesign. The blocks around it are following: new rental towers are opening between the station and the AirTrain, with thousands of apartments behind them in the approved pipeline.
Big Apple Moving has moved southeast Queens since 1979 — NY DOT #T9942, USDOT #382368, 5.0 on Google across 2,300+ reviews — and the work here now runs in both directions: into the new elevator buildings, and out of the houses that have anchored these blocks for generations.
Jamaica’s four kinds of move
New-tower move-ins
The station-area buildings run on managed freight elevators and strict COI wording. We collect the requirements at booking and land the paperwork before the crew.
House moves
Detached and semi-detached homes across South Jamaica, Jamaica Hills and Rochdale’s surroundings: driveway or curb staging, basements counted up front.
Jamaica Estates moves
Larger detached houses on the Estates’ curved streets; bigger inventories, longer carries, planned as full-day jobs.
Packing and storage
Full packing before, storage between closings or lease gaps, cartons collected after.
Moving into a building that didn’t exist last year
A brand-new tower is the easiest and the strictest move in Queens at the same time. Easiest, because the freight elevator is modern and the loading dock was designed on purpose. Strictest, because new management companies enforce their rules to the letter: a certificate of insurance in their exact wording, a booked elevator window, sometimes a move fee on the building’s side.
None of it slows us — the COI goes out the same business day — but it does punish movers who show up with yesterday’s paperwork habits. If your building opened this year, tell us; we will ask for its requirements sheet before we quote the window.
What a Jamaica move costs
| Home size | Typical Jamaica job | Market estimate range (2026) | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1-bedroom | New station-area tower with freight elevator | $450–$1,100 | 3–5 hours |
| 2-bedroom | Prewar apartment near the station or tower two-bed | $800–$1,800 | 5–8 hours |
| 3-bedroom house | Semi-detached South Jamaica or Jamaica Hills home | $1,200–$2,800 | 7–12 hours |
| Estates house | Large detached home, full-day job | $2,000+ | 8–12+ hours |
Market Estimate Ranges (2026) — Queens market data, not a quote. Big Apple Moving bills hourly from $150/hr for two movers or by binding estimate.
Tower moves live and die by the elevator window; house moves by the carry and the basement. Both go into the binding estimate before you book — which is the entire point of one.
Timing a move around Jamaica’s traffic
The station district concentrates buses, taxis and AirTrain traffic onto Sutphin Boulevard, Archer Avenue and Jamaica Avenue through the working day, and the Van Wyck feeds JFK around the clock. Trucks cannot use the parkways, so crews arrive by the Van Wyck and the arterials — we set start times to land before the district fills, and on station-adjacent blocks we scout legal truck position the day before.
For NYCHA households — South Jamaica and Baisley Park among them — Big Apple Moving is an approved vendor and the agency paperwork is handled on our side; the borough-wide details live on our Queens movers page.

Yes — it’s our fastest-growing job in the neighborhood. New towers ask for a certificate of insurance in their exact wording and a reserved freight-elevator window; we collect the requirements at booking and send the COI the same business day.
Both, plus Jamaica Hills and the blocks toward St. Albans. Estates houses run as full-day jobs; South Jamaica houses are planned on the carry and the basement like any southeast Queens home.
Sutphin, Archer and Jamaica Avenues fill with bus and airport traffic through the day, and the Van Wyck feeds JFK constantly. We start station-area moves early and confirm legal truck position the day before.
The neighborhood plan approved in October 2025 rezoned about 230 blocks for close to 12,000 new homes, with buildings up to 23 stories allowed on Jamaica Avenue. For movers and residents alike, that means more elevator-building moves every year.
Yes. Big Apple Moving is an approved NYCHA and HRA vendor; the vendor paperwork runs on our side and the date follows the agency’s schedule.
Full or partial packing the day before, and storage that bridges a closing gap — one crew on both legs of the move.
Two to three weeks normally; more for new towers, whose elevator windows book out as buildings lease up. Month-end and summer weekends run 20–30% above normal.
