Three Neighbourhoods Wearing One Name
The converted loft buildings — the old manufacturing stock off Wythe, Berry and North 3rd — are the best case and the most misunderstood. Freight elevators are usually large enough to swallow a sofa whole, which is a genuine advantage. What catches people is that loft buildings often restrict move hours far more tightly than residential ones, because the building still runs on a commercial rhythm. Some allow moves only on weekdays. Some only between fixed hours. Find out before you pick a date, not after.
The waterfront towers on Kent and River run like Manhattan high-rises: a Certificate of Insurance naming the building, a reserved freight elevator with a fixed slot, a designated loading entrance, and a hard stop when the slot ends. Ours is included and we issue it straight to management. The elevator booking has to come from you — buildings only take it from the resident.
South of Broadway is a different century. Older three and four storey walk-ups, narrow staircases, and the turn at the landing that a two-seater makes and a three-seater does not. Nothing about that is a problem for us, but it is roughly an extra hour per flight, and a quote given on the assumption of an elevator is not a quote for your move.
Bedford Avenue Is Not Where You Want the Truck
The streets around Bedford and North 7th are the busiest in the neighbourhood and the hardest to put a truck on, particularly at weekends when the bar and restaurant traffic starts early. The side streets running east and the blocks closer to the water are considerably easier, and in most cases we will work from whichever end of your building has the better approach rather than the one with the front door.
Tell us the cross streets when you book. There is usually a better answer than the obvious one, and on an hourly move the distance between the tailgate and your door is the single biggest variable you can control.
Weekday mornings are the calmest window here by a wide margin. If your building allows it, a 9am or 10am start on a Tuesday will move faster than the same job on a Saturday afternoon, and that difference is real money when you are billed by the hour.
