Hastings-on-Hudson is a small village with a particular set of moving problems: streets that climb steeply from the river, a lot of pre-war housing, and driveways that were never designed for a 26-foot truck.
Moving To or From Hastings-on-Hudson
Hastings-on-Hudson sits in the town of Greenburgh in Westchester County, on the east bank of the Hudson roughly 20 miles north of Midtown. It is one of the rivertowns, with Dobbs Ferry immediately to the north, Yonkers to the south and Ardsley inland to the east.
Most of the moves we run here fall into one of three patterns.
Into the village from New York City. Typically a family trading an apartment for a house, usually timed around the school year and often around a Metro-North commute. These moves are straightforward at the city end and slow at the Hastings end, because the house is usually older and the street is usually on a hill.
Out of the village into the city, or further. Downsizing, a job move, or a student leaving. The variable here is how much has accumulated in an attic or basement that a New York apartment never had room for.
Within Hastings and the surrounding rivertowns. Short in distance, but rarely quick. Two houses five minutes apart can be very different jobs depending on which one has a driveway a truck can actually reach.
Distance is almost never what sets the price on a Hastings move. Access does.

The approach to the house is the biggest single variable. Several streets in the village climb sharply from the river, and some driveways are steep, narrow or both. If the truck has to park on the street and the crew carries up a long drive or a flight of exterior steps, that is time. It is why a phone quote without a survey is worthless here.
The age of the house comes next. Much of the housing stock predates the Second World War. Narrow stairwells, tight landings and doorways that will not take a modern sofa are common, and anything that has to be disassembled adds hours.
What is in the basement and the attic is the third. House-to-apartment moves out of the village are almost always larger than the owner estimates, because a house absorbs fifteen years of storage that an apartment never could.

Registered with the New York State Department of Transportation for moves within the state and holding an active USDOT number for interstate work, with cargo and liability coverage on every job.
Certificate of Insurance
Issued free to a building or an HOA that asks for one. Relevant if you are moving into or out of one of the condo or co-op buildings in the village or nearby in Yonkers.
Full Furniture Protection
Blankets, shrink wrap and tape on anything with a finish. Floor runners and door jamb padding at both ends, worth more than usual in older houses with original floors and trim.
Disassembly and Reassembly
Beds, tables, desks and shelving taken apart and put back together. On pre-war stairwells this is often the only way a piece gets out at all.
