Packing 101: Useful Packing Tips for Moving
Moving away from one city or state to another is a stressful process and even more stressful is packing and unpacking your stuff before and after your move. Here are some helpful tips that will help you to pack your stuff as efficiently as possible.
The sooner you start packing, the better. It’s generally recommended that you start getting ready for moving at least two months in advance. You don’t want to have to rush things at the last minute, and find yourself still packing when the movers arrive. You can pack a little bit at a time over a couple of months, making the time-consuming process of packing your things to boxes a lot more manageable.
You should pack things in order of how often you use them, starting with the things you use the least often. If you own things you literally never use at all, consider selling them on Ebay or Craigslist, or donating them to a local thrift store. Moving is a great time to declutter your life. Start packing with things like books and fine china that you don’t use particularly often. Things you need on a regular basis can be packed last.
Don’t pack in a way that results in heavy, unwieldy boxes. Instead, pack light. Heavy items can be packed individually or in small groups into smaller boxes, making them easier to handle. Large boxes should be packed with lightweight items, keeping them as easy to move as possible.
Label Your Boxes
It’s hard to tell what items are in which box unless you label them. To do so, you can simply use a permanent marker to write on the outside of the box. If the contents are fragile, you can make a note on the box, and use arrows or labeling to let the movers know which side should face upward.
Set Aside a Designated Space for Packing
You can designate a special packing area somewhere in your home. Whether it’s an entire room or just one corner, packing in one place helps prevent packing materials from getting everywhere.
Use Specialized Boxes for Certain Items
Specialized packing boxes are available for certain types of items. There are special dish boxes for packing up dishes, as well as wardrobe boxes with built-in racks to hold clothing on hangers and prevent it from wrinkling.
Consider Full Service Moving with Packing Included
If packing on your own sounds like a major hassle, consider hiring a full service moving company. Many local movers offer packing as an additional service for an extra fee, meaning you don’t have to worry about handling it yourself.
