Moving Tips
PRIOR TO
MOVING
Request an on-line estimate to get a ballpark idea of how much
your move will cost. Big Apple offers a free
on-line estimate to get you started. For large or complicated moves,
we highly recommend scheduling an in-home estimate to receive our "No
Surprises!" guarantee. Call us at (718)768-7818 or (212)
505-1861.
Select a New York Mover based on customer service, reliability, professionalism
and reputation. The lowest estimate does not mean the most cost-effective
move. Big Apple Moving's intention is to make your move as smooth as possible,
quality is the key, and with over 25 years of excellent service, we at
Big Apple Moving are confident that we are the right NYC moving company for you at the best
price.
Check with your building management to avoid unnecessary moving
day interruptions. Be sure to inquire about necessary certifications,
confirm parking restrictions at both your old and new locations, and reserve
elevators if needed.
Take an inventory of your belongings and dispose of items that
are no longer needed. This will help to streamline your move and will
eliminate the need for additional boxes, packing and unpacking.
Order supplies for your upcoming move and start the packing process
early. Big Apple Moving has a variety of packing supplies that can be ordered
when you schedule your moving date and will be delivered to you free of
charge. These supplies will arrive well in advance of your move so that
you can start packing items that are not currently being used. Out of
season clothing, books, extra linens, etc. can all be packed in
advance.
Notify your utility providers to switch/cancel/start utilities
in a timely manner. Some providers have special hours or requirements
to transfer, or cancel services, so check this out as soon as you can.
Don't forget to notify your banks, insurance companies, credit cards,
children's schools, doctors, subscriptions, perscriptions etc. of your
upcoming move to ensure a smooth transfer of your personal information.
DO NOT PACK valuables, like jewelry, securities, money and valuable
papers. You should remove them and put them in a safe place prior to moving
day. ie. safe deposit box, relative/friend etc. You should transport them
with you personally. Flammable or perishable items should be disposed
of before your move.
Confirm your moving date a few days in advance.
PACKING TIPS
Big Apple offers full packing and unpacking services and are highly-skilled
with furniture disassembly and assembly. We are accustomed to the packing
and transferring of valuable goods including china, glassware, valuable
art pieces and large items such as pianos. If you decide to do your own
packing, be sure to follow the suggestions below:
Supplies:
Boxes (small, medium, large, and specialty sizes)
Packing Tape (be sure to tape the top and bottom of boxes)
Packing Paper (white is preferred as newsprint may transfer ink
onto your items)
Bubble Wrap (for delicate items)
Markers (to indicate "FRAGILE" items and be sure to mark each box
with location for easy room placement)
• Place all loose items in boxes to prevent loss or damage.
• Use small boxes for heavier items, such as books, magazines, CD's etc.
• Use larger boxes for lighter items, such as linens, blankets etc.
• Wrap small, fragile items (dishes, glassware, nick nacs etc,) individually.
Pad the bottom of the box, stuff papers into the corners of the box and
cover the top. Bubble wrap may also be used and make sure to label as
"FRAGILE."
• Small artwork and mirrors should be placed in boxes and labeled as "FRAGILE."
Medium or large artwork and mirrors should be packed in our special glass
bin or, if insurance is needed, our picture boxes or wood crates.
• Table Lamps should be disassembled, separate shades, bulbs, and bases
before packing. Label as "FRAGILE."
• Electronics should be packed in their original cartons, if available.
Otherwise, pack well in a heavy-duty box using cushioning materials or
bubble wrap. Make sure to back up computers and to include all of the
necessary wiring for easy set up.
• Hanging clothing should be packed in wardrobe cartons; shoes, handbags,
and bed pillows can be put in the bottom of the cartons.
• Desks, large and antique cabinets, dressers, bookcases, wall units,
side tables and small cabinets should be emptied and their contents boxed.
• File cabinets may need to be partially emptied depending on the size
of cabinet and the type of move.
• Things that you will need immediately upon arrival should be labeled
as "LOAD LAST".
MOVING DAY
Big Apple movers are top-notch. All of our workers have over six years
of experience and are highly skilled, courteous and professional. A Big
Apple Foreman will be on hand to address any requests, questions or concerns
that you may have.
• Be sure to review your copies of the Service Order for your move.
• Offer the movers something to drink. Do not offer alcohol.
• Make sure the movers have correct directions to their destination.
• While unloading, tell the movers the location of every item, this will
save you valuable time and make your moving-in process smoother.
• Some customers ask about gratuities. In general, the average gratuity
for a move is 15-20% of the total cost. However, a gratuity is not obligatory
and you should never feel pressured into giving a gratuity.
AFTER THE MOVE
Once you are in your new home, Big Apple wishes you much luck in adjusting
to your new surroundings. We hope that our service has helped make your NYC move as smooth as possible. Once you are settled in, we would appreciate
hearing from you via letter or email so that we can keep providing the
best service possible.
