In general, an estimate should clearly include the billing parameters for such items as travel time, number of men and truck(s), hours of moving labor, packing materials, and any special services to be performed (such as piano handling, disassembly, additional stops, etc.). These items should all be separately itemized. Examine any estimates you receive carefully and critically.

In order to maintain a high quality of service, the tariffs of reputable moving companies cannot fall below a level necessary to provide the service and make a fair profit. If an estimate is very low, that may not mean that your final cost will be less. More likely, it means that the estimate has not been accurately prepared, and that items have been omitted from the charges.

An hourly rate that is substantially lower indicates either that fewer men will be used and the job will take longer, or that the quality of labor, service, or equipment may be below standards. Some companies charge very high hourly rates; that is their prerogative. Their customers feel that the most expensive service equals better quality. Big Apple customers are careful consumers who could easily afford to pay more, but they get the best for less!
